E-scooter Information
What is an electric scooter?
A: An electric scooter (e-scooter) is a battery-powered personal transport device with a standing deck, two wheels (front and back), and handlebars for steering. Riders stand on the deck, use a throttle to accelerate, and squeeze a brake lever to slow down. E-scooters are popular for short commutes, recreational riding, and last-mile transport.
How does an electric scooter work?
An electric motor (typically mounted in the front or rear wheel hub) is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The rider controls speed via a thumb or finger throttle on the handlebar, and braking is handled by a combination of electronic and mechanical brakes depending on the model.
What is the difference between a kids' e-scooter and an adult e-scooter?
Kids' e-scooters like the GYROOR H30 Max have lower top speeds (16 km/h), smaller motors (150W), lighter frames, and safety-focused features like dual brakes and adjustable handlebars — all scaled for smaller, lighter riders who are still developing balance and coordination.
Adult e-scooters like the X2 Iron are built for real-world commuting: more powerful motors (450W), higher speeds (25 km/h), larger tyres for road stability, longer ranges (up to 30 km), and features like a front storage basket. An adult should never ride a kids' scooter, and a child should never ride an adult model — both the weight limits and speed capabilities are matched to their intended rider.
At what age can a child start riding an electric scooter?
The GYROOR H30 Max is designed for children aged 6–12. Before this age, younger children (ages 4–6) may be better suited to a ride-on like the Minions Electric Bumper Car, which has a much lower speed and includes a parent remote control. Always match the product to the child's age, weight, and confidence level.
Ride Safely
What safety gear do I need to ride an electric scooter?
The following gear is strongly recommended for all riders:
- Helmet: mandatory in most Australian states; a bicycle helmet at minimum for all ages
- Knee pads: highly recommended, especially for children and new adult riders
- Elbow pads: important protection when learning
- Closed-toe shoes: always; never ride in thongs or bare feet
- Bright or reflective clothing: especially for riding at dusk or dawn, and for adults commuting
For children on the H30 Max, a full protective set is non-negotiable. For adults on the X2 Iron commuting at higher speeds, a helmet and closed-toe shoes are the minimum. Additional protective gear is always worthwhile!
How do I ride an electric scooter safely?
Stand with feet parallel on the deck (or one foot slightly forward for balance). Use the throttle gently and progressively, and avoid sudden acceleration. Look ahead, not down at the deck. Brake early and smoothly—sudden braking can cause the front wheel to lock.
For children, always start at the lowest speed setting in a safe open area with an adult present. Adults riding at higher speeds should scan further ahead and anticipate hazards earlier.
How do I start an electric scooter?
Most e-scooters require a kick-start—push off with one foot to reach a slow rolling speed before engaging the throttle. This protects the motor and provides initial stability. For younger children on the H30 Max, an adult should demonstrate this first and supervise until the child can do it confidently on their own.
What should I avoid when riding an e-scooter?
Avoid riding in heavy rain or standing water, carrying passengers, using a phone while riding, and riding at night without lights. Children should additionally avoid riding near driveways, roads, or any area with vehicle traffic, and should always have an adult nearby. Adults commuting on the X2 Iron should avoid roads with speed limits above 50 km/h and always ride predictably in traffic.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is calculated based on your location and the items in your order. You will always know the shipping price before you purchase.
Laws Around Riding In Australia
Are electric scooters legal to ride in Australia?
A: E-scooter laws vary significantly by state and territory and are evolving. In most jurisdictions, privately owned e-scooters have restrictions on where they can be ridden legally. Always check current rules with your local transport authority before riding on public roads or paths.
Do kids' e-scooters have different legal rules to adult models?
The legal rules apply to the vehicle type and location, not specifically whether it's a "kids'" model. In most states where e-scooters are permitted, there is a minimum age of 16. This means the H30 Max (designed for ages 6–12) is best suited to private property use in virtually all Australian states regardless of local e-scooter laws. The X2 Iron, designed for adults 18+, is more likely to be used in jurisdictions where adult e-scooter riding is permitted.
Do I need a licence to ride an electric scooter in Australia?
It depends on the state. Victoria requires a valid driver's licence or learner permit. Most other states with legal e-scooter access (QLD, ACT, WA) do not require a licence but do have minimum age requirements (typically 16). Children under 16 should stick to private property in all states.
Is a helmet mandatory for e-scooters in Australia?
Yes. In every state and territory that permits e-scooter riding, an approved helmet is mandatory. We recommend wearing a helmet regardless of local law, for both children and adults.
What is the legal speed limit for e-scooters in Australia?
Most states set a maximum of 25 km/h where e-scooters are permitted, with some areas limited to 10 km/h. The X2 Iron reaches up to 25 km/h—always ride within the legal speed limit for your area. The H30 Max at 16 km/h falls within legal limits where riding is permitted, though its riders (ages 6–12) are generally below the minimum legal age for public path riding in most states.
